Final roughs?

I re-shot the post-it note and lego stings at Islington Mill last thursday and animated them both over the weekend with sound. I intend to re-shoot some of the scenes, and refine some elements of both, though other then that these give a rough idea of the final outcome for both.

At Islington Mill

I went to Islington Mill to re-shoot some previous scenes. I feel this will give more of a feel of the mill's character, as its being shot on location rather then shooting it in my own 'office!'

Two roughs

Knocked out two roughs, kind of giving an idea of the final outcome of the lego and post-it note ideas.

New ideas

I took a step back from what I had explored and tried to think of some new ideas. I was quite impressed by several stop motion animations I found on youtube involving lego and post-it notes for example;

So off I went and bought lego (how I missed the brightly coloured bricks that defined my childhood!) and post it notes (not as fun but useful). And thus more test runs. Whilst making the lego one I had the idea of adding type, and to be honest I quite like it!

Graphic Equaliser developments 2

Following feedback on the original ideas, it was agreed it was too clean and didn't really reflect the character of Islington Mill or its residents. Not really sure what else to do with it, I opened After Effects and tried to make them a bit weird. The first idea involved making it more "dirty" by duplicating the effect layer and overlaying it randomly like a poor quality VHS from the 80s.

The second added a yellow square to the sequence, bouncing off the bars of the equaliser before falling off. I'm not sure if I really like it to be honest and may consider scrapping the idea.

Lights and shadows

Another idea I have involves having objects in motion projected as silhouettes on a wall using a torch or something similar. I explored this last year for a Typography Brief via photography (see above).

I'm not sure how I'll do this, however made a short stop motion moving a pencil in front of a desk lamp. Certainly one to consider further investigation.

Graphic Equaliser

Further developments of the Graphic Equaliser, I expanded the original video a bit and tidied up the animation and made an "ending" where it shifts from the graphic to a possible logo.

First test runs

My first rough ideas drafted out in After Effects, only a few seconds each!

The first one is inspired by "the Pen story" which uses thousands of photos linked together showing a mans progression through life (see here - http://islingtontbm.wordpress.com/2009/11/15/the-pen-story/). I took a few photos whilst moving around my room and printed them, arranged them on the table, adding one whilst taking a shot. Effectively a frame within a frame!

The second experiment is an entirely digital pursuit, which is meant to make reference to the music related activities of the Mill by making a kind of 'graphic equaliser' like you find on music players and recording studios.

The third one is what I like to call the "Pong" idea and is a fairly minimalist sequence involving three bars moving around the screen, bouncing off each other. Its meant to represent the companies in the mill which use computers heavily in their work.
